I havent traded IG markets for awhile but they had a guaranteed stop loss to prevent you from blowing up your account when I did.
I fail to see why people keep quoting leverage as being a danger, if you do not understand your actual position(unleveraged) in the market(its obvious because 1 share = 1 CFD) you are far too stupid to be trading in the first place
I think generally shorting is far safer than going long, often when a companies share price is going sideways or up and new news hits the market that shows it has been all smoke and mirrors, yes, the share may overshoot the downside on open, but often it doesnt and becomes a long term under-performer and a pretty good/safe short
the other side of the coin, going long, its usually a very slow grind upwards (unless the market has just finshed crashing) and often you get caught out by a bad announcement that puts you in the red
