The son of a very old friend had GBS when he was about fourteen. It was many years ago but I remember he was incapacitated for about a whole year. He went on to make a full recovery, later marrying and raising a family. He was also able to finish his schooling and went on to work at the smelter in Gladstone.
I don't know much about the condition, other than he was temporarily paralysed and missed a full year of school.
As far as I am aware he had only conventional medical treatment and his age may have been a factor in his recovery.
