Body de-myelinates the axons of the nerves interrupting nerve signalling.
Usually comes secondary to some form of infection and then the body decides that that the myelin sheath is foreign and attacks it (auto-immune).
Treatment is available to try and decrease the auto-immune component.
Always is short lasting ( in terms of actual attack on the nervous system) but symptoms can continue to affect the patient for many many months after the condition (fatigue, mild neural issues,struggle with change of temperatures).
The main worry (in terms of mortality) with guillain barre is that the patient will die from suffocation as the nerves to the lungs can be affected as well. As such, some patients with this condition will need to be intubated if the condition gets bad enough.
