Any option other than complete deregulation will be a political liability and require an even more complex system of regulation and government intervention in order for the system to 'work'. The Feds must act decisively following the inquiry. There are some wheat pools that need clearing sooner rather than later. At the PGA Annual Conference on Thursday, it was flouted that it is highly likely the legal costs of the AWB directors and employees from the inquiry will come directly out of the pool returns! Not happy Jan! The AWB is already dsicounting grain sales to start getting some of the stuff sold.
Ron Greentree Australia's largest wheat grower was present and he estimates that 80% of AWB's SP can be attributed to holding the Single Desk. Many growers were present who are unsure what to do with their shareholdings. Of course most are hoping for higher prices to return but they would have left the Conference feeling that little good news is on the horizon.
