Financial Review Sunday transcript: September 7, 2014

    • Deborah Knight, Financial Review Sunday: The hype surrounding the release of a new Apple iPhone this week points again to just how much technology dominates every aspect of our lives. And behind that technology is an old commodity finding new markets - in high end components and advanced long life batteries. Graphite is the latest hero of the resources sector - and while China dominates, Australian companies are in the game, Eddy Meyer reports.

    • It was the black sheep of commodities. Now it’s the beating heart behind much of the technology we love. Believe it or not - Graphite is cool again.

    • China has supplied 80 percent of the global market - but it’s reduced its supply by a third for domestic reasons.

    • Along with traditional uses, new global demand is being driven by technology requiring higher grade - and more profitable - flake graphite.

    • Nearly everyone wants to be in a commodity that’s going to be very strategic longer term.

    • Vincent Pisani plays down suggestions the market is over-hyped - believing prices will stabilise. Higher grade graphite is cheaper to produce and that will determine which new players make it to market.

    • I don’t think it’s overplaying it a bit, the beauty is the tech boom and the need for batteries in things like cars and obviously consumer electronics has meant that graphite’s had an enormous rebirth as a mineral that’s got a commercial value and it’s a huge thing to be into right now
