Banjar, thank you for your input. You make some good points. However, here are some further salvos: 100 years ago coal supplied 90% of world energy, now it is 30% and falling - that is the long term trend. A coal fired power plant is 30 - 35% efficient but a gas plant is 55 - 60% efficient and shortly the gas fuel cells will be 70% efficient. Greenhouse: coal releases 3 times the CO2 of gas. Already we are seeing sea levels rising at 1 cm pa which will soon be 10cm pa and then the panic will set in. Wait 10 years for a sea change: coal will be out! Geothermal could supply all out energy needs greenhouse free - already Iceland is geothermal and is becoming a fully hydrogen energy economy. Nuclear is on the come back trail and is suddenly politically correct. Renewable energy from wind is now cost competetive with coal. The introduction of carbon taxes will tip the scales away from coal, and the clean technology is decades away for coal. l thought that the debate on greenhouse gases would take decades and coal would remain in favour for many years, but the shift is happening much more rapidly. How many times do you hear : "climate change" on the media these days ? Once awareness in the general public sinks in coal could be on the back burner. Temperatures in Alaska have risen a full 5 degrees - this was supposed to happen in 2058 according to climate models! If Alaska melts, sea levels rise by 10 meters! There is acknowledgement that Alaska has reached a tipping point to irreversible warming. The exposed tundra which was frozed for millenia will now thaw and release gigatons of CO2................the scientists know, the turn will happen. Business still has the head in the sand, but change is in the wind. Dont be too close to the fan!
