News: Qantas calls for level playing field

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) chief executive Alan Joyce has called on the Federal Government to ensure Virgin Australia Holdings Limited (ASX:VAH) operates under the same rules as it does, according to media reports.

 

Mr Joyce reportedly told journalists, investments such as those it was making in a heavy maintenance base in Brisbane would be threatened unless there was a level playing field with regard to aviation policies.

 

Qantas wants the Foreign Investment Review Board to review the level of foreign investment in Virgin, and consider the prospect of its largest shareholders taking it private. 

 

Mr Joyce conceded last week that there was no appetite in Canberra for changes to the Qantas Sale Act, which limits foreign ownership in the national flag carrier.

 

Qantas generated a net profit of $6 million in fiscal 2013.
