I hope Ppyinterest doesn't mind my joining in. Lady fingers variety have thinner trunks, (stems), and assuming this is ppy's point...they would be easier to cut, handle and transport.
As to your further points Keets, I find these interesting and thought provoking.
Certainly less labour intensive not growing the plants to the point of (fruit) harvest, rather simply as a crop of 'trunks'.
Since one could theoretically disperse with the whole light and nutrient combative nature of bananas (this being crucial to manage for optimum fruit yields), and grow instead the more vigorous Williams or Cavendish varieties, harvesting the trunks before they become too awkward in size to cut/remove off site.
I feel however that some work would need to be done to ascertain the best age of plant to cut, as my gut feel is that a more mature fibre than not would give the best product.
Interested in yours and Ppyint's further thoughts.
