Building approvals rise strongly during April

Approvals for the construction of new homes rose 9.1 per cent across Australia in April, official figures show.

Local councils approved the construction of 13,774 new homes, including houses, townhouses and apartments in multi-unit buildings, in April.

That compares to 12,630 approvals in March, seasonally adjusted.

Over the year to April, building approvals were up 27.3 per cent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

Economists' forecasts had centred on a four per cent rise in approvals in April.
