"Sirtex Medical researches and develops products, most notably liver cancer treatment SIR-Sphere. With a 193 per cent share price appreciation in 2012, the company has become a poster child for the Australian medical research and bio-pharmaceutical sector.

The company reported 37 per cent growth in SIR-Sphere dose sales in the September 2012 quarter and in November announced plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Germany in line with its increased demand expectations.

Due to the heavy levels of investment required to get new drugs and devices to market – and the need to obtain regulatory approval – biotech stocks have been a somewhat marginalised part of the Australian sharemarket, but some analysts are tipping the sector to be a hot space in 2013."
