Have been doing some additional research today. Many Coking coal stocks have also been hammered in recent times (not just thermal coal) as has most of the market.
Why has JAL held up - see my points regarding management, lack of sovereign risk, surrounded by operating coking coal mines, no debt, tightly held register etc.
I also found this evening an article that appeared on the bull.com.au on 25/6/12. Well worth a read.
