You are right, Septic. It is never a good thing to wipe out the value of a purchase once you have entered into an agreement to buy it...
However, 'goodwill' is generally a waste of ink on a company's books, and in the longer term, wiping it off now makes it easier to determine a company's true value... so in the longer term it is good (for the investor/trader).
I wonder why companies buy into this 'goodwill' crap in the first place??? (Pardon the French.)
