With relation to rock chip sampling and clay sampling, you can't take "chip" samples of clay... Why? Because it's not rock, for starters... Rock chip is just that, rock. There is no rock in clay, hence rock chip sampling not applying to clay. Instead, they would use some other sort of sampling. At the end of the day, they will probably test it the same way, by use of mass spectrometer or other chemical testing methods. I'm no genius or expert on that subject, but that's my understanding of it. DYOR.
