Cableguy, You are right,it would be a pity to see companies like Penrice close. But our government see it as a necessary sacrifice to demonstrate our international commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. The argument is that by making these sacrifices other countries will be inspired to follow our lead.
This is referred to as making the poluter pay. Penrice is a big, energy intensive business so it should shut down and we could import our Soda Ash instead, hence reducing our per capita carbon emmissions.
Our government must think if we shut down enough of these industries the Chinese and Indian governments won't fail to notice. The steel industry is likely to be required as another sacrifice.
Hopefully the Penrice workers will be able to be retrained for the expected boom in Green Jobs.
