A FOOTNOTE to our print edition report on Monday regarding antimony.
The item talked about a looming supply shortage of this metal. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, a rather important new development was edited out, which may have considerable impact on antimony (which recently hit a new record high over $US12,000 a tonne).
As we wanted to say, supply is likely to get even tighter in the next few years. At a time when some Chinese antimony mines have closed, due either to environmental issues of exhaustion of metal resource, Samsung Electronics has just begun manufacturing a new generation of memory devices for computers, mobile phones and USBs; these new generation devices use an alloy of antimony, germanium and tellurium.
