On what basis do you feel that paying gst on importing retail items is so difficult to execute.
Keep in mind that other countries have managed it.
Really just a question of where you set the exemption level. Also possible to set a yearly limit of tax free imports.
For example, $100 individual item limit, plus a yearly limit[imagine a box on your tax pack].
Self assessment has proved to be a powerful tool with taxation in this country.
System of payment[and data for compliance], available thru credit card etc.[banks might not like it, but do I care?]
Keep in mind, this is not for the benefit of retailers, but to protect the australian tax system.
I dont care whether something is bought at Harvey Normans, or from a retailer in Mongolia, gst needs to be, as much as possible, levied on both.
Be very surprised if Australia doesn't follow other countries in doing this.
