Tonight I waited with another 300 people for a taxi at the taxi rank at Sydney airport for about 40 minutes. When I finally got in the cab, the driver said he had been waiting to pick us up for 50 minutes.
So there is a whole bunch of people wanting to get in a cab, and a whole bunch of cabs wanting to have someone in their cab, but the queuing system cant seem to work.
Apparently the driver tells me they have changed the security guard company managing hte queuing system.. yes you heard right.. the most important skill for managing a queue is to be a security guard.. not the brightest fellas in my experience...and yes they have switched 3 times in the last few years.
My observation, is that the guard couldnt figure out how to use 20 taxi spaces to get 20 people into 20 cabs simultaneously, and managed about 3 simultaneous boardings of cabs at any go at it.
I did agree before my arrival at home, with the driver that they should contract out the management of hte queue system to the taxi company themselves on a commission basis.
We all pay $3 to the airport apparently for the privelege of this wonderful queueing system.
And it occurs to me that the managemement of Sydney airport might have its eye off the ball. I hope the queueing system of planes in the air is better than what is observed on the ground.
