The naked truth: ASX has most short sellers covered

Market players believe there are adequate measures in the Australian system to prevent short-selling from decimating the market. Each month the ASX updates a list approved for short-selling activity. Shares on this list are subject to liquidity and capitalisation tests, and companies that are subject to a takeover are removed. The four banking majors, along with key blue-chips and investment banks such as Macquarie and Babcock & Brown are included on the current list of 320 shares permitting hedge funds to engage in "naked" short selling. New rules in the US will put a halt to the practice of naked short selling. However, traders have warned that the activity is part of the normal functioning market and have warned against trying to completely end the practice in Australia
