Just to add my two bobs worth into the mix It SEEMS to me that kids these days come out of schools, whether they be private or public, with absolutely no command of the English Language, little in the way of communication skills, cannot add or subtract or even do the most simple maths without a calculator, are rude, generally ignorant and expect the world owes them a living.
They can't hold a pencil or a knife and a fork, let alone a conversation and they have no discipiline or respect for themselves or others.
Their grammar is appalling and they are incapable of constructing a sentence. I had to point out to my nephew the reason he couldn't understand a sentence he was reading was because it wasn't a sentence because it didn't contain a verb. I rewrote it for him and then he could understand what it meant.
To be fair - I am not confining this problem to children either. Terry McCrann who is old enough to know better has no command of the English Language which I have pointed out in letters to various editors over the years. His journalistic skills are appalling. My Mother was a Journalist - and she would cringe when she read is work.
Children and adulsts alike now begin sentences with "and" and "but" which is a no no.
Too many children say "youse" instead of "you" and "him and me went" or worse still "him and me 'seen' or 'done'.
Even last night I saw a female newsreader say "her and her husband fell overboard" - so "her" fell over did "her".
Don't get me started on the education system. I have family members who are teachers and they live in despair and try their best to drag their students above the level of ignorance they seem to wallow in but generally find it is a waste of time when other teachers don't know the difference themselves.
Back to ABC - if you can get the kids at an early enough age and teach them the basics they can carry that forward with them. Go Eddie and raise the level from pre-school. You will do us all a favour LOL
