They have been told repeatedly that they are gone, kaput, marooned on shrinking bits of ice. But do they pay heed to the dictats of life's ranking order? The hell they do. Whatever we say they refuse to go away. Indeed, according to "The Polar Bear Catastrophe That Never Happened" their numbers are up to around 40,000 from a low of 10,000 in the 1960s.
