Yes Mark, the previously untouchable major auto manufacturers certainly lost huge amounts of public support over that bit of treachery. The most amazing thing is did they really think they could get away with it indefinitely or was it just a stopgap until they could find a way to comply with the new emission laws legally.I don't share your opinion that EVs are only a transitional power form. Depending on the cost of battery materials IMO they will hold more than half and up to 90% of the mobile market (E bikes through to heavy trucks) from 2025 to the foreseeable future for 2 main reasons.
1) EVs have the early adopter advantage, although they are not mainstream yet they will be soon. We can see what they look like, how they perform and can purchase one right now from a reasonable range of choices if we want to. Although you can purchase a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle now the choice is limited and they are relatively expensive.
2) Simplicity = lower manufacturing cost. Although they are lighter than batteries a fuel cell is a more complex beast so logically it will always be more expensive to produce and you still have to have high pressure storage for the hydrogen as well as a battery to capture regenerative braking energy.
