While we think for the most part that a word beginning with a vowel is always preceded by ''an'' and not''a'' there clearly are exceptions to the rule as in the case so rightly pointed out of ukelele.
Why is it an umbrella but not an ukelele
It simply doesn't sound right.
The English language is at best confusing.
You only have to look at trough and cough both pronounced as ''off''
But then you have the same  ''ough'' in the following 
Dough pronounced doe 
Bough pronounced bow [ as in ships bow]
Rough and enough pronounced uff 
Through pronounced threw
Brought, bought and caught different again .
And why does bow have two different pronunciations 
Given those discrepancies we surely can forgive the occasional errors made, especially by those whose first language isn't English.
We're all perhaps getting a little fraught and lacking in tolerance. but it's actually the language which is an ass not the writer.
You would never convince me that the the word ''more'' didn't originate from the blaring of a cow, the exact same sound as when shes looking to get through the fence to fresh grass
