As well as the copper (owned by Glencore) and zinc refineries (owned by South Korean company), Townsville is also a logical point to fly into many Western QLD exploration and development projects in the Mt Isa area. So visiting a site could be another plausible reason I agree.
There are also a few decent drilling contractors in the area so that may be another possibility? Also has a pretty decent Dept of Geology at the JCU University so could be any number of reasons?
I bet the weather wasn't too flash for fishing though.
Edit: Just saw the LinkenIn comments and the visit to the Sunmetals Zinc Refinery is reason enough for Rob to visit - they are short of Zinc cons and always looking for more concentrate.
