    I think you are missing the bigger picture.

    Are you happy for electric cars to drive at no cost on existing infrastructure? The 80c you mention will never be the case.

    Government will in some shape or form replace the lost revenue from the fuel excise with another 'tax'.
    Taxing the individuals that can't afford to change (ICE drivers) would be close to political suicide having a diminishing group to tax to fill the void left.

    If the tech allows for cars to self drive then it is not a far stretch to see the gov charging you per km to drive your car in addition to the rego....

    or are we all happy to have GST upped to 15 or 20c so we all suffer equally.
