We can't even get started on one Nuclear plant let alone many small modular reactors. Australia is teeming with nimbys who can't embrace 70 year old technology ( and the vast improvements within that cast timeframe) let alone cutting edge. Although SMR's have many advantages, scalability, flexibility etc, the biggest problem lies in security, the same with small floating reactors. It is much safer to secure one site - and have all specialist operators and engineers on one site.

Large nuclear plants also have scalability. On a secure, optimally chosen site, more reactors can be added. If we began construction of ONE large modern plant now, it could provide up to one fifth of our energy needs and would be expected to run for almost the rest of the century!

The benefits of cheap energy to the population and the economy are immense.

For sure each approach has it's positives and negatives - for me the main problem with a big plant is the time to build. I mean s.22a needs to be repealed before the red tape can even get started... then from breaking down to connection to grid is likely 8-10 years.

With SMRs we'll possibly be able to buy them off the line by the time legislation is changed and approvals obtained...
