At least one of the previous attacks involved the kidnapping of foreign miners but I think it was in the north of the country. Kidnapping of foreigners would always be a risk in these countries regardless of Muslim extremists.
You'd think that getting closer to the capital the security presence would increase so WAF is probably fortunate in this regard. Seems the attacks in the east are also coming from the forest regions still futher away form WAF.
