Isn't it better to get slightly disappointing news out of the way, quickly, rather than allow things to come through the rumour mill, complete with exaggerations and horror stories?
Announcing a small problem early, and making clear that it is being promptly fixed, does make management appear open and transparent with stakeholders. Building confidence among investors, suppliers and, especially, customers, can't be bad.
