Some lawyers are scum I'm sure, but probably not the majority. They are a necessary evil and sometimes their work, which they obviously need to personally benefit from - like everybody with a real job - can benefit society. Just one small example in today's news; the clamping down on silica dust regulations and enforcement. Sure the motivation for this is insurance companies and workplace industries looking to cover their own backsides and they lawyers will make some money out of it, but in the longer term the litigation threat and financial penalties will save many deaths from a pretty horrible disease:

I'm not defending lawyers, just making the point that even self-interested parties with selfish motivations can benefit the society as a whole, even if this isn't their main motivation. Just look at the pelvic mesh case or many others.
