"students get paid with government-funded scholarships (used to be called APA) which should be circa $25K per annum (slavery). Others that are not on APA most often get paid via university-sponsored scholarships (same amount)"
I wish I was wrong on the funding subject... But I can assure you the majority do not get paid 25K per annum, certainly not from a university lol. An important thing about TTT being involved in the study is that they will more than likely contribute funds towards the PhD students research budget. Generally a PhD student is given approx. $2000 per annum over a 3 year full time study period (by the uni), equating to $6000 to spend of e.g. equipment, material and regents needed to complete their research. So that being said, having an increased budget for one, tends to allow for a greater amount of data to be collected to support their aims and hypothesis. Which certainly helps when one wants to publish their research in a peer reviewed journal article; Good quality data is king (as is the experimental design).
