Who knows what Churchill would have done had he been in power in the late 30s. Negotiations of some sort would surely have taken place, maybe successfully.
Different personalities, different era.
All we can do is look to what the present offers. Kim publically declared on the biggest of global stages a position of complete denuclearisation. President Trump achieved that without using his two biggest bargaining chips, sanctions abolition and a removal of troops in SK.
Time will tell if it works but it's a great start.
If Kim goes back on his word then things will be back where they were. The ball's in his raggedly non-floodlit court whilst President Trump goes back to the country club veranda to tidy up some spying fallout.
