Well although others here are more competent than I to give a technical answer, still as a historian my overall impression is that the situation reminds me of how Texas (in my native country) suddenly developed from a poor outpost of the former Spanish Empire into one of the richest states in the USA (several decades after we took it as a war prize from Mexico, fairly in a war the Mexican tinpot dictators started, and btw until the mid-1800s virtually the only non-Indian inhabitants of Texas were American settlers, NOT White Mexicans!): The discovery of a crude oil gusher in 1901, precisely at the beginning of the mass-production of automobiles.
