Speaking as a former holder, I can't say that I have taken enough notice in recent times to form an opinion on the relative merits of each party.
I can also speak as part of a former joint CSIRO/companyX development which was sold to a large foreign company which subsequently decided to remove the companyX technical manager and consequently approached me to replace the manager (as I had a major role in the CSIRO side of the development). I declined the invitation. The product subsequently disappeared without trace.
I can also speak as the former leader of a development group in companyY where the board was not very sympathetic with the needs of the development group. I subsequently moved to companyZ and took with me all the other employees and contractors. CompanyY, for some reason decided to sell all the IP to companyZ which then went on to successfully develop and market the product.
So whilst I don't know much about the attributes of the alternate boards, and it is true that given enough time anybody can be replaced, I do know who I would be following.
