This explanation may or may not be relevant:
A provision for bad debts is not a bad debt expense in accounting terms; it is a provision debited to the P&L ac with the corresponding credit in the balance sheet; if the relevant debt is ultimately found to be bad, then it is debited to the provision in the balance sheet, not to the P&L ac.
