Can't help thinking that people are misreading the situation.

The basic results of the DFS would have been known to the company for some time already. They apparently indicate a project that will work, will make money, but has high costs. If all they were going to do from here in was play around to optimise where possible, then I believe they would have completed the DFS and done this in a separate phase "pre-construction optimisation" or something like that.

To me the fact that, at this late stage, they are extending the DFS in this way indicates that they see some more fundamental way or ways to improve the economics of the project.
