Exercising options is not automatic. You must either sell the option as an option on the market by the expiry date and thereby never exercise it or pay the 1c to exercise, convert it to a share and then either keep it or sell it on the market as a converted share. Never let it expire unless the price of the heads warrants so (heads are worth less than the price of the exercised option). Simply leaving it to reach the expiry date will counter it worthless.
