Getting rid of the plastic bags is just another way to shift costs onto the consumer. A bit like when they got rid of the checkout staff to force you to scan and bag the stuff yourself. That is how the system works.
Because eftpos/credit is cheaper for them, now they are gradually trying to reduce the number self-serve checkouts with cash facilities too. Not much left now, except to get us to pack the shelves, as well.
Actually, only plebs go to the supermarket. Why not pay extra online and get an immigrant to bring it to your door? The poor sod has to see you in your undies, but that is what being 'Iphone' class is all about.
