Lanthanum is used in hi tech glass mixes, particularly for the film and defence industries.
Cerium is used in alloys, particularly stainless steel and alluminium alloys.
I'm not sure of the supply/demand status of these minerals at the moment. They are not uncommon, despite being called rare-earth elements, but the issue is always economically minable quantities. Bit like Vanadium, common as all heck but only four companies are primary producers of the stuff, leading to incredible price fluctuations.
