Eshmun, I think it is probably fair to say that paying out $75M in dividends one year is an indication that there was massive cash being generated at one time. At the same time few of the other gold companies could convert the high gold price into dividends and wasted cash on marginal projects (largely now worthless). RRL did buy McPhillamy's but didn't develop it stubbornly in the wrong market. I think management pedigree in building cheap plants and other gold companies also helped with the market darling status.
Your OBV stats are more to do with the way shares (and particularly gold shares) are churned through algorithms and traded these days as opposed to 5-10 years ago. Because the down period in the gold sector has occurred with higher volumes this naturally means the OBV for most gold stocks will look similar to what you have posted.
