Thought you would like an update from a post by lekki on the APG thread. That person returned from China this week.

I got back from China last week. Pollution is their biggest problem. Air, water systems and soil all polluted to some degree, with only about 30% of China's vast landmass arable, sort of explains their big farm-land grabs in Africa and Australia. I travelled for 28 days with blue sky for only 1/2 a day. 1 night we saw 3 stars and the Chinese were estatic. EVERY place I went to (7,000 km travelled) was smoggy. City or country - it was no different. The Chinese people want the Government to focus on pollution reduction as it's first priority. At the National People's Congress, (the annual and only forum for ordinary Chinese to raise issues which is held every March) President Xi Jinping pledged to punish with "iron hand" those who violate the country's environmental laws. They are shutting down some steel plants which are old and/or unproductive, but steel output remains the same. Ie they're cutting down on capacity rather than output.

Now is the perfect time for anyone who has a way of combatting or mitigating any aspect of China's pollution to make their move.

Can IRD alleviate this pollution problem in any way ?
