The Retort is the "oven" at the end of the process that separates out the silver. When Mercury was used to extract Gold, the Retort would boil off the Mercury through a flue, leaving the Gold in the bottom. It's not a big or complex piece of equipment, and I can't imagine it costs a lot either.
