Meerkat - good post but I think the issue is the opportunity cost - the $1.00 share price had factored in some of that opportunity - The Traditional Owners had no say over the sea so the heritage issues where not as great as you may otherwise encounter

Sea bed mining is fast becoming a very efficient way of mining - the size of the affected sea bed was tiny (the analogy used was one seat within the MCG based on the size of their tenements and there was bugger all on the sea bed anyway so the environmental issue was in my view quite manageable

Basically the Government lead investors down the garden path and the share price at the time is not relevant as there had been quite a lot of talk about the federal minister Mr Bourke siding with the TO's prior to the ban plus from memory Minister Snowden weighed in with some comments that really began the slide of the share price

The opportunity cost here is truly staggering - My belief is any compensation will involve the granting of the islands in Blue Mud Bay and that is how the government will keep the figure down - but it should still be many millions
