You are correct; if they recover the fish (drillstring) then they can drill on. Deviation is not a big deal. The well might be deviated as planned to intersect a certain structure at different depths when the structural highs have a different location, i.e. when they are not directly under oneanother.
SIDETRACKING around the fish is the bad (expensive) news if they cannot retrieve the fish.
