QUEENSLAND LOSING OUT ON URANIUM EARNINGS, SAYS FEDERAL GOVT
Friday August 5, 2005, 6:23 pm
BRISBANE, Aug 5 Asia Pulse - Queensland is losing money from uranium mining opportunities because of the state government's anti-uranium mining policy, federal Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane says.
As the federal government pushes ahead with plans to open the Northern Territory up to uranium mining, Mr Macfarlane has called on the states to follow suit.
"Under the current (Queensland) government there will be no uranium mines in Queensland and that is just a lost opportunity to Queenslanders," Mr Macfarlane told reporters today.
"There are literally billions of dollars of uranium waiting to be exported while we have state premiers arguing ideologic based on a now outdated policy."
Mr Macfarlane said there were known uranium deposits in the Townsville area of north Queensland.
"There is no sense to a ban on mining in Queensland or the Northern Territory or Western Australia when there is such a huge demand for uranium," he said.
