Copper strike may add 30,000 workers

A MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR mine supporting up to 30,000 workers could open in the Territory within five years.

The operation would entail building a township bigger than Palmerston and, possibly, running a rail spur nearly 400km across the Outback.

Sydney-based junior exploration company Proto yesterday announced it had struck high-grade copper at Lindeman's bore on the privately-owned Limbunya cattle station, 380km southwest of Katherine.

Company boss Andrew Mortimer said the discovery on the Antrim volcanic plateau ........
