AUSTRALIA will host a major summit aimed at taking on one of the world's worst killers: malaria.
Sydney will host the Malaria 2012 conference in October and November, Foreign Minister Bob Carr announced on Friday.
"The conference will provide an opportunity for Asia-Pacific leaders to build on our successes, protect the gains and further develop regional responses to malaria," he said.
The conference will bring together representatives from governments, aid agencies and health experts from around the region.
Malaria affects more than 200 million people worldwide, about 30 million of those in Australia's region.
The disease is believed to kill around 700,000 people every year, about 40,000 in the Asia-Pacific.
